British Grand Prix 2023: Russell beats Hamilton and Norris to Silverstone pole

Max Verstappen's pole hopes ended in the final moments

Perez out in Q1 after spinning off into gravel

George Russell produced a stunning performance to claim pole position for the British Grand Prix, beating his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris.

Russell's time of 1:36.650 was enough to hold off Hamilton by just 0.038 seconds, with Norris a further 0.043s behind in third.

It was Russell's first pole position in Formula 1, and only the second for Mercedes this season.

Max Verstappen, who had been fastest in all three practice sessions, looked set to claim pole for Red Bull but a late crash in the final moments of qualifying ended his hopes.

The Dutchman lost control of his car at Copse corner and slid into the gravel, bringing out the red flags and ending the session.

Perez was the other big loser in qualifying, as he was eliminated in Q1 after spinning off into the gravel at Stowe corner.

The result means that Britain will have a 1-2-3 on the grid for the British Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.
