Convicted of Assault With a Semiautomatic Firearm

On Tuesday, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020. Lanez, 30, was found guilty of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and possession of an unregistered firearm following a three-week trial.

Background of the Case

The shooting occurred on July 12, 2020, after a party at Kylie Jenner's Los Angeles home. Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion, also known as Megan Pete, had been arguing in a car when he allegedly shot her in the foot. Lanez claimed he was not the shooter, but prosecutors presented DNA and ballistic evidence linking him to the crime.

Sentencing and Aftermath

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford sentenced Lanez to 10 years in prison for the assault and one year for the weapons charge. He will be eligible for parole after serving at least four years. Lanez's attorney, George Mgdesyan, said they are "obviously disappointed" by the verdict and will appeal the sentence.

Megan Thee Stallion, 28, has since recovered from her physical injuries but continues to suffer from emotional trauma. She has been outspoken about the incident and has used her platform to advocate against gun violence and support victims of abuse.
